When we think of a square, we often imagine a large gathering space that represents the city. In Europe or Turkey, the word ‘square’ typically refers to a wide open area that can accommodate a large group of people. In Cambridge (Massachusetts), however, many small nooks and corners are called squares, as a gesture of friendship toward certain people or institutions. Unlike the large squares we envision, these squares are smaller spaces with limited capacity, offering snapshots of people gathered in the moment.
I took photographs of these squares in Cambridge during the COVID pandemic.
