The Fisherwomen

The women in the family who work as fishers head out to the nets by boat before dawn, gather the fish, and return to shore. Then, they all work together to sort the fish. The grandfather of the house takes the fish to the market. In the evenings, they go back to check and clean the nets.

Their mother, Mrs. Zeliş, has been doing this work for 42 years. Her daughters-in-law, daughters, and sons are also involved in fishing. However, the grandchildren have chosen to study at university and pursue careers in different fields. The family fully supports their children. They are an incredibly good family. This summer, Hasan, who studied maritime, also helped Dilek, Fatma, and Mümine temporarily.

These hardworking women not only fish but also continue their duties at home. They go olive picking, make ashure (a traditional dessert) in large pots in the village during ashure season, and help their mother with gardening. They are truly engaged in every aspect of life. They have a say in matters in a way that other village women might admire. Everyone in the family, whether young or old, woman or man, mother-in-law or daughter-in-law, has a voice, and everyone treats each other with great respect. Everyone is at peace with themselves. In this documentary project, I had the pleasure of meeting four self-assured women who respect themselves, those around them, and nature, as well as the respectful and kind-hearted young Hasan who views life and people positively.
